Heft

The book I'm reading his "Heft" by Liz Moore. There are two main narrators throughout the book: Kel Keller and Arthur Opp. Arthur was a college professor as a young man that came from a wealthy family. He had an affair with one of his students, Charlene, that wasn't much younger than him. They really loved each other but then she moved. They wrote letters for awhile but soon lost connection. Since then, he was fired from his job, lost contact with his family and became very depressed which led to obesity. Years later he recieved a picture from Charlene of her son that he was not aware of.
       The Narrator switches to Kel Keller, Charlene's son. He is an athletic teenage boy with many problems hidden within. His mother became addicted to drugs and alcohol. She never goes out in public or takes care of Kel. His father left them when he was four and he has no siblings. Life is a struggle for him to get good grades, impress the baseball team, keep his high status, all while he is struggling to keep his mother alive at home. This book really inspired me and I recommend it to everyone!
